कभी सिनेमा प्रेमियों की भीड़ से गुलजार हुआ करता था पायल टॉकीज जो शहर के टॉप सिनेमा टॉकीजों की लिस्ट में शुमार था । उस समय बॉलीवुड की महंगी बड़े बजट की फिल्में पायल टाकीज में रिलीज हुआ करती थी। इसका सुहाना सफर 1980 से शुरू हुआ था। उस समय एक से बढ़कर एक बेहतरीन फिल्में रिलीज हुई जिनमे पहली फ़िल्म 1980 में सुनील दत्त की लहू पुकेरेगा रिलीज हुई थी उसके बाद शशि कपूर राखी अभिनीत बसेरा फ़िल्म ने दर्शकों का खूब मनोरंजन कराया उसके बाद 1981 में राजेश खन्ना की मल्टीस्टारर फ़िल्म अशांति आई,1983 में मिथुन चक्रवर्ती को सुपर स्टार बनाने वाली फ़िल्म डिस्को डांसर रिलीज हुई , 1988 में श्रीदेवी की नगीना फ़िल्म , 1990 में अमिताभ बच्चन की बड़े बजट की फ़िल्म हम आई , 1991 में अमिताभ बच्चन की सुपर हिट फिल्म आज का अर्जुन ,1997 में धूम मचाने वाली फ़िल्म अनिल कपूर माधुरी दीक्षित अभिनीत फ़िल्म तेजाब व वर्ष 2000 में सनी देओल की फ़िल्म ग़दर आदि कई बेहतरीन फिल्में ने पायल टॉकीज में रिलीज होकर सफलता का इतिहास रचा। लगभग तीन साल हुए सिनेमा के मालिक रामस्वरूप मारवाह की मौत के बाद उनकी पत्नी इस सिनेमा हॉल को बहुत अधिक समय तक चला ना पाई।
आज आर्थिक तंगी के दौर में वेंटिलेटर की तरह दम तोड़ रहे सिनेमाहाल को बचाना बेहद मुश्किल है।
पायल सिनेमा के बंद होने पर अपना दुख व्यक्त करते हुए देहरादून सिंगल स्क्रीन सिनेमा एसो० के अध्यक्ष भीम सिंह गुंजयाल ने कहा कि देहरादून में एक के बाद एक सिनेमा के टूटने का सिलसिला चल रहा है परन्तु सरकार द्वारा इस पर कोई ध्यान नही दिया जा रहा है। उन्होंने कहा कि अगर समय रहते सरकार ने इस पर ध्यान दिया होता तो आज सिनेमाहालों की फिजा कुछ और होती जो खत्म हो गए उन सिनेमा हॉल को शायद बचा लिया होता।
देहरादून सिंगल स्क्रीन सिनेमा एसो० के वरिष्ठ उपाध्यक्ष एवं छायादीप सिनेमा हॉल के मालिक क़ामिल ने पुराने सिनेमा हॉल के बिगड़ते हालात को देखते हुए सरकार से मांग की है कि आर्थिक तंगी के दौर में गिरते हुए सिनेमा टॉकीजों को बचाने हेतु सरकार नई नीति बनाये। उन्होंने कहा कि डिजिटल सिनेमा के साथ प्रतिस्पर्धा के बीच फ़िल्म चलाना बेहद चुनोतीपूर्ण है। बड़े कॉरपोरेट घराने की नीतियों के चलते सामान्य सिनेमाहॉल खत्म हो रहे । कोरोना काल से सिनेमा हॉल पर जो आर्थिक संकट छाया तब से कोई भी सिनेमाहॉल आज तक उभर नही पाया। आज स्थिति ये है कि सिनेमा हॉल स्टाफ को वेतन देने के भी लाले पड़ गये है । उस पर नगर निगम द्वारा दुगुना टेक्स वसूला जाना सरकार की उदासीनता को दर्शाता है। उन्होंने कहा कि आज शहर की एतिहासिक पहचान के रूप में सदियों से लोगों का मनोरंजन कर रहे सिनेमाहॉल को उजाड़ने की बजाए उन्हें बसाने की जरूरत है क्योकि सरकार के कार्यो व उपलब्धियों को पर्दे पर विज्ञापन के रूप में प्रसारित कराकर सरकारी संस्था के रूप में कार्य कर रहे सिनेमा हॉल को सरकार के प्रोत्साहन की जरूरत है।
